Thomas K. Marshall was born in Pennsylvania on December 24, 1783.
He
married Malinda Craven, Daughter of Armon Craven, on November 17,
1816 in
Jessamine County, Kentucky. The Armon Craven family had moved to
Fayette
County, Kentucky from Washington County, Pennsylvania in early
1787. Malinda
may well have been Thomas K. Marshall's second wife as Thomas'
first son
Robert A. Marshall was born on March 13, 1813 three years before
Thomas
and Malinda's marriage.
Malinda was born on February 5, 1800 in Kentucky. The next three
children
of Thomas K. Marshall are James B. D. Marshall born about 1819,
Columbus
W. Marshall born February 13, 1822, and David Luther Marshall born
about
1823. All were born in Kentucky. Columbus, who is in my line, was
born in
Trimble County, (formally part of Henry County) Kentucky.
The remaining children were born after the family moved to Smyrna
Township,
Jefferson County, Indiana. They were John C. Marshall born
February 23,
1825, Sarah M. Marshall born about 1828, William H. Marshall born
about
1830, Samuel A. Marshall born in 1832, Armilda E. Marshall born in
1834,
and Jerimiah F. Marshall born about 1836. Thomas K. Marshall
obtained land
in Smyrna Township, Section 10, Township 4, Range 9 and also
purchased property
at S5,T4,R9 & S8,T4,R9.
Other land in Smyrna and Republican Township to the South shows
ownership
by a Thomas Marshall but this could well be Thomas H. Marshall
also born
in Pennsylvania in 1772. Thomas J. Marshall was born in Virginia
and lived
in Milton Township, Jefferson County, Indiana. All three are shown
in the
1850 Jefferson County census.
Thomas K. was the Trustee of Smockville School Section. His will
was drawn
up by Joseph Glass Marshall, Lawyer and Judge in Madison, Indiana.
Malinda
was among the founders of the Hopewell Baptist Church in Volga,
Indiana.
Thomas K. Marshall died March 27, 1858 and is buried at Hopewell
Cemetery
in Volga, Indiana. Malinda later married their next door neighbor
Campbell
Kinnear. Malinda died on July 4, 1870 and is also buried in
Hopewell Cemetery.
There are several Marshalls found in Jefferson County, Indiana.
The exact
relationship to each other is not fully understood. Reverend
Robert Marshall
of Fayette County, Kentucky was the father of several Marshall
children
which have a Madison, Indiana connection. Sons Samuel Vance
Marshall, Joseph
Glass Marshall, and Robert Marshall Jr. all lived in Jefferson
County. Rev.
Robert was born in Down County, Ireland on November 27, 1760 and
moved with
three brothers (John, William, Thomas) and one sister (Mary) to
Washington
County, Pennsylvania. He died in Fayette County, Kentucky in 1833.
Robert Marshall of Republican Township, Jefferson County was the
Justice
of the Peace at the time of his death. He was replaced on
September 27,
1828. He died June 7, 1828 (32 yr of age) at or near Ramsey's Mill
later
known as Kent, Indiana. Thomas K. Marshall purchased some items
from his
estate. Robert had two children referred to in his will. Sarah age
5 and
Margaret age 3 in 1828. Robert had a sister Margaret who also
lived in Republican
Township, Jefferson County and from her will she identified Robert
and his
two children as part of her family. She also spoke of her brother
Thomas's
children without naming them and her sister Polly Officer. Her
property
consisted of 20 acres from her father William, & 20 acres from
her unnamed
sister. All land is willed to her brother Thomas's children.
Margaret made
the will on August 14, 1834 and the will was presented on
September 18,
1835.
Daniel Marshall's will of August 31, 1847 lists his children as
Rebecca,
Hannah, Isaac C., Elenor, Mark A., William M., & Mary M.
Marshall with
wife Catharine. Daniel and family also lived in Jefferson County.
His will
was presented on February 9, 1861. Hannah's will was written
February 20,
1857 and also names Ellen & Rebecca Marshall. Jefferson County
records
also mention Thomas H. Marshall born in Pennsylvania in 1782. His
wife was
Sarah Kinnear born around 1792 and died between 1840 and 1850.
Children
were Sarah J. born about 1829, Robert J. & James H. (twins)
born about
1831, Margreta born about 1835 & Joseph born about 1838, all
in Indiana.
Thomas J. Marshall was born in Virginia in 1771. His wife was
named Harriet
and his son was named John Armstrong. He is living with John
Armstrong in
Milton Township along with Jane Hopkins, age 60 also born in
Virginia as
shown in the 1850 census.
